Acne & pimples

Acne is one of the most common reasons people see a dermatologist. It is a medical condition, not a hygiene problem, and it usually responds well to a plan matched to your skin.

Also described as

pimples · breakouts · whiteheads & blackheads · painful bumps

Patients on Practo list acne and pimples as their reason for visiting.2

What it is

Acne starts in the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. Blocked pores, extra oil, bacteria and inflammation together cause whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps and, in some people, deeper painful lumps.

It is most common in the teenage years but often continues, or begins, in adulthood, especially along the jawline.

Common factors

  • Hormonal changes (puberty, menstrual cycle, some hormonal conditions)
  • Family history
  • Heavy or pore-clogging cosmetics and hair oils
  • Certain medicines
  • Picking or squeezing, which can deepen marks

When to see a dermatologist

  • Over-the-counter products haven’t helped after a few weeks
  • Bumps are deep, painful or leave marks or scars
  • Acne is affecting your confidence or mood
  • Acne appears suddenly in adulthood or with irregular periods or unusual hair growth

At your consultation

  1. 1The doctor asks how long you’ve had acne, what you’ve already tried, and about your skincare, cosmetics and medicines.
  2. 2Your skin is examined to judge the type and severity of acne and whether there is any scarring.
  3. 3You leave with a plan explained in plain language, including how to use each step and when to follow up.

Options that may be considered

Which, if any, is right for you is decided by the doctor after examining you.

  • Prescription skincare and medicines chosen for your acne type
  • Skincare and lifestyle guidance
  • Chemical peels, for selected patientsVerify: Listed on directory profiles; confirm availability at the clinic.
  • Procedures for acne marks once acne is controlledVerify: Listed on directory profiles; confirm availability at the clinic.

Realistic expectations

  • Most acne plans take several weeks before a clear change is visible; follow-up visits let the plan be adjusted.
  • Acne can come back. Maintenance is often part of the plan.
  • Results vary from person to person. No treatment can promise clear skin.

Questions

Will acne go away on its own?

Mild acne sometimes settles with time, but persistent or deeper acne can leave marks and scars. Seeing a dermatologist early reduces that risk.

Should I stop using all my products before the visit?

No need to stop anything on your own. Bring your products, or photos of them, so the doctor can review them with you.
